Happy final day of Throwback Week! When I was first setting up calendar, I did a quick google search to see if I was missing any of the classic workouts. I found this Cindy Crawford one and knew I had to try it! After such a fun week of throwbacks, especially last night’s Richard Simmons Sweatin’ to the Oldies, I was a little disappointed that this one was not quite as lively as the others.
Rewind- who is Cindy Crawford?
Cindy Crawford is an American model turned actress in the 90s. She had a short fitness stint from 1992-2001 with 4 fitness videos. Her first video, Shape your Body, came out in 1992. Radu, her trainer, is known for being very intense, but the best of the best. Together they created the Shape Your Body workout. The workout consists of two 40 minute workouts and one ten minute workout at the end. The idea is that you alternate days between workout #1 and workout #2. You can squeeze in the 10 minute workout on the days when you don’t have a lot of time.
What kind of equipment do I need?
Thankfully, you don’t need very much. She recommends using a chair, I used my TV stand. She also uses a light set of weights for a few workouts (I opted for a little heavier than hers upon seeing the actual moves). She also includes a pillow, but I was able to do the section laying flat on my back.
What was Workout #1 Like?
The YouTube video breaks down all of the sections by time in the comments which is an added feature! The class includes a warmup, legs, glutes, upper body, abs, and a cool down stretch. The filming is interesting- it flips between Cindy Crawford on a beach / NYC rooftop and in a studio with Radu. It definitely had an interesting vibe.
Most of the excises felt similar to ones you would find in a barre or pilates class. Every exercise was a ten count and you typically completed a set 3 times before moving on to the next category. I will note that they do count relatively quickly. As someone who works out often, I wasn’t expecting to be falling behind on some of the counts. You can definitely pause and work at your own pace – that’s the beauty of videos! The only thing that really struck me as different was that she recommended watching the class all the way through before working out so that you weren’t stopping to look at her and could stay on pace. Truthfully I think until you do the workout multiple times you are still going to be looking at the screen for guidance.
Would you do it again?
Overall Rating: It was a nice workout, but I think it was too similar to barre and pilates. I love barre so I would probably choose a barre class over this workout again. If you are just starting out, this is definitely a good workout to get your feet wet. None of the reps last for very long and she hits all of the core categories for muscle toning. I do really think my abs are going to be sore tomorrow!
