Kayla Itsines famous BBG (Bikini Body Guide) is known around the world for being a killer workout that girls seem to love. I printed out the ENTIRE guide back in the day (it’s about 100 pages give or take) and found it when I moved over the summer. For whatever reason I couldn’t throw it away – despite not having even looked at it in the past 5 years. Who knew the perfect moment to pull out that bad boy would actually come?
Wait wait wait…who is Kayla Itsines?
Kayla Itsines is a personal trainer from Australia. She co-founded the Bikini Body Training Company in 2012. She has created a following of over 20 million people worldwide who love her workouts and meal plans. In 2017 She launched her SWEAT app, creating the largest online community for women’s fitness. You can get a free 7 day trial on her website! After that it’s $19.99 per month or $119.94 per year.
So how was this workout?
It was a killer! I decided to start on Week 1-Day 1. I wanted to experience what everyone goes through when they first decided to join Kayla and her BBG community. From my experience in the health and wellness space, people decide to commit to long-term courses like this because there is something in their life that they have a burning desire to change. After completing workout number one, I personally would have to REALLY desire to change to stay on this workout plan.
The entire program is set up for 12 weeks. You have a Monday workout, a Wednesday Workout, and an optional Friday workout. In between you are supposed to complete LIIS (Low Intensity Steady State) and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts on your own. Your Monday / Wednesday / Friday workouts are 2 circuits consisting of 4 exercises each that you do for 7 minutes. You can rest for a minute after each circuit and repeat twice for a 28 minute workout.
As I mentioned, I was ready to try Day 1 out of the old school Ebook! The class tonight required a kettle ball, a bench, and weights. I used a heavier weight in place of a kettle ball and my couch ottoman instead of a bench. I was totally nervous I was about to go through the entire ottoman the whole time – I recommend using something way sturdier just in case! As someone who works out ofter (daily at this point LOL) I was dead by the end of round three. I pushed through to the end and was completely covered in sweat feeling wiped.
Should I try Kayla Itsines BBG Workouts?
Overall Rating: If you are looking for a workout plan to keep you in a routine, then yes! If you are a beginner who discovered the BBG community and Kayla Itsines, I’m going to recommend starting with some other workouts first. The last thing you want to do is try something too difficult that turns you away from working out forever! I also didn’t try the app but her Ebook (at least the one I have from 2015) does not include any stretches for you to follow along with. The app is probably different, but as you all know, I don’t appreciate a workout without a pre and post stretch.
While I had the OG guide, here is a YouTube link to similar workout here: Kayla’s SWEAT Youtube Video (includes a warm up and cool down :D)
