Checking out the Closet

Switching gears from last months 30 Life Hacks, this month I am checking out the closet, re-evaluating everything that I own if you will. I have always been a lover of all things clothing related. I have an insane amount of everything from leggings, to sweaters, to tanks, to bras and underwear. Do I need all of this stuff – HECK NO! Do I even wear all of this clothing? Well that’s what I’m here to figure out.

Every once in a while I get the urge to purge through everything in sight. I actually enjoy cleaning everything out because it feels like I am making room for newness to come into my life. I’m not talking about new clothing (although of course I wouldn’t hate that), I am talking new opportunities in life.

So How Bad is the Closet?

Checking out the Closet
These are the four sections of our closes (two full closets "each").

This is what we are working with – Ben and I have two full closets each, but I definitely take up three of the sections leaving him with only one. As you can see we also have built-in drawers in the closets and then an extra two dressers in our room. Ben only has 4 out of the 12 drawers from the exterior dressers. Am I proud of this? NO! Does Ben need a little more drawer space – probably yes. I need to clear at least one drawer this month for him- wish me luck!

Clean Closet
Let's be real, I have the first 3 sections from left to right and Ben has the very last section on the left. He's better at sharing than I am.

What did you wear today?

Today was Day 1 and I’ve never been more stressed out to strategically pick an outfit that I won’t mind NOT wearing for the next 30 days. Let’s just say it was harder than I thought. Usually I just wear my workout clothes during the day. I typically workout on Thursdays, but today I decided to take it easy. My work-from home outfit consisted of my FAVORITE pair of leggings and a Syracuse T-shirt topped off with my favorite oversized Syracuse sweatshirt.

Oversized Sweatshirt Syracuse
For whatever reason I usually get cold throughout the day so I always have a sweatshirt on hand!
Syracuse T-Shirt
...and under the sweatshirt another Syracuse Top. Can you tell I went to Syracuse?

I won’t lie, these leggings are Yogalicious from TJ Maxx and they are perfectly high waisted and NOT see-through. I loved my first pair so much that I made sure to get there the next year to grab another pair! You can’t go wrong with a pair of $12.99 leggings. As for the shirts – I love EVERYTHING OVERSIZED. As a kid, I always hated having a t-shirt collar up against my neck. Once I discovered that you can just buy a size up (or two or three), my wardrobe completely changed!

What did you donate?

As part of this 30 Day Challenge for April, I am wearing 30 different outfits to see what I actually wear (no repeats allowed!) and I am donating something every day along the way! I pulled open my workout leggings drawer (yes workout leggings are in a separate drawer than regular leggings) and remembered my workout shorts. Being completely honest, I am NOT one to ever work out in shorts. Sweaty legs rubbing against each other – ya, no thanks! I pulled out this Burgundy pair of champion shorts that I bought my freshman year of college…in 2010, 11 years ago! It was time to say goodbye to these shorts since I don’t remember wearing them over the past couple of years.

Donate Clothes
I'm not sure these were ever cute but I definitely wore them to the dinning hall with a long sleeve tee on many occasions.

Today’s Key Takeaway

This wouldn’t be a proper blog post if there wasn’t a key takeaway here (other than pure entertainment of course). This week I’ll be dropping different places that you can donate your clothes!

American Red Cross – The Red Cross is one of the oldest non-profit organizations in our country! They are partnered with GreenDrop who will take your clothes and re-sell them in thrift shops. Proceeds go to the American Red Cross who aids in disaster relief, emergency assistance, and disaster preparation for millions of people around the globe. You can bring gently used clothes to a GreenDrop location or schedule an at-home pickup!

How are you cleaning your closet? Where are your favorite places to donate clothes? I’d love to hear more!

xoxo
