This month is all about learning a new language every single day! Unfortunately languages are extremely complex, so the plan is to just master the basics. When it comes time to travel again, I want to be able to communicate with everyone! I am sharing some quick Spanish phrases that I learned today to (hopefully) make a trip to Spain or Mexico more enjoyable! Nothing is harder than being somewhere unable to communicate, especially when lost 🙈
The Basics
There are over 20 countries that speak Spanish as their official language! That’s a lot of different countries that you could visit and have no idea how to communicate! I have no clue how I went my entire life without really knowing how to speak Spanish. In the US, most people learn Spanish in school or speak it at home. Clearly I have a LOT of catching up to do! If you are anything like me, just keep these basics handy:
Hello – Hola
Hi (informal) – Buenas
Good Morning – Buenos Días
Good Night – Buenos Noches
Goodbye – Adiós or Chao
See you Soon – Hasta Luego
How are you – ¿Cómo estás?
I am fine, and you? – Estoy bien, ¿y tú?
What is your name?– ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (Informal) or ¿Cuál es su nombre? (Formal)
My name is…– Mi nombre es or Mi llamo
Thank you – gracias
You’re Welcome– De nada
Please – Por Favor
Yes– Sí
No – No
Maybe – Tae Vez
Don’t Worry – No se preocupe
Be careful with using tú, it is very informal and to be used with friends and family. You can use the word “usted” for a more formal situation – like with your boss or a stranger.
I hope the next time you speak a foreign language isn’t so scary! Keep these quick Spanish phrases up your sleeve and you’ll be communicating with others in no time! Just practice and don’t be afraid to not sound like a native (it’s very hard to do).
Let me know your favorite phrases in Spanish!
xoxo
