How to Use Wai
People of Thailand used Wai as a Thai greeting that is sign of respect. There are three different levels of Wai to use depending on who you are speaking to. While this is not a spoken form of the language, it is an important part of the culture.
- Used with family and friends – Press palms together towards your chest and bow bringing your thumbs to your forehead
- Use with highly respected people like teachers/parents – Press palms together at your chest and bow while bringing your thumbs to your nose and your index fingers to your forehead
- Use with your elders – Press palms together at your chest and bow while bringing your index fingers to your forehead
When someone gives you a Wai, it is polite to respond by putting your palms together at your chest.
