Tonight we set out to cook one of Ben’s favorite dinners from Hawaii, Loco Moco. I had never heard of it until he requested it. When I searched through Pinterest to see what Loco Moco even looked like, I was surprised to see it is a meal with an egg on top. He thought I would love it (despite the egg) and I agreed to it because after all, this month is all about trying new dinners.

Loco Moco Ingredients

We had no idea what Worcestershire sauce was-by the way, it is located by the steak sauce at ShopRite and I am sure other grocery stores as well. We skipped the sesame oil and white sugar and used a little less butter and white rice. I did not realize until we started cooking that I had also overlooked the cayenne pepper so we substituted chili powder instead!

Ingredients for Loco Moco

Ben has been saying that these dinners have been taking way longer than the recipe says it is going to take to cook. We timed this one just to be sure! John says it would take 15 minutes to prep and 15 minutes to cook. We made our ground beef patties a little thicker than he recommended so it took us about 10 minutes longer to cook.

John posted a 7 minute video where he provided commentary and explained the history of Loco Moco and the step by step process for preparing and cooking. It is super easy to follow along as you go. If you are a visual person like me, it is really nice to be able to see how to do it all before you dive in on your own!

Speaking of visuals – check out the images below to see our prep-work tonight!

1/4 lb or 1/2 lb ground beef Patties with salt, pepper, and chili powder
Beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and corn starch make up thee "gravy"

After the meat and gravers were prepared, we got to work at the frying pan. We follower the instructions to do 6 minutes on each side and thought it needed a few minuted longer (our patties were THICK).Once we removed the patties, we added the gravy to thicken while cooking the egg. Both were done in about two minutes.

Patties cooking with green onion.
Fried egg with a little salt and chili powder.

Overall Rating: Very easy to prepare and cook! Ben thought it tasted pretty authentic. I had nothing to compare it to but thought it had good flavor as well!

Loco Moco!

Let me know if you try it as the original recipe or with your own modifications!
