Tonight I had the opportunity to do a 60 minute one-on-one training session with Matt Cheng from Beyond the Movements. I have been working out with Matt and his wife Riley since last March when we all started staying home! They offer a group classes Monday -Friday which is how I do most of my workouts. Even though I see them everyday in class, I hadn’t actually done a one-on-one workout with them until tonight!
Who is Beyond the Movements?
Beyond the Movements is a husband and wife team who developed a 90 Day Energy Reset to help people regain their energy, tackle their nutrition, and structure their workouts. Matt and Riley help everyone from those with hectic lifestyles to parents to people with injuries to athletes. There is no one size fits all here, Matt and Riley work with you and your needs to help you achieve your goals and create routines to help you sustain them.
How did the one-on-one Training session go?
I thought tonight would be 45 minutes of working out with 15 minutes of stretching and recovery. When I work out with Beyond the Movements during the week, we do 30 minute sessions 1-2 times per day, Monday through Friday. Each class targets specific muscle groups through Tabata, metabolic strengthening, and cardio style workouts. We also have a couple classes that are dedicated to recovery including stretching and foam rolling. I logged onto zoom not knowing what to expect but ready for however hard Matt was about to make we work.
Thankfully he didn’t kill me! Because we’ve basically been working out together everyday for almost a year over zoom, Matt knew exactly where I needed help! We actually started our hour off with a little foam rolling session. I have really poor shoulder mobility and he can always tell that in class. We did a few foam roller exercises to help loosen up my shoulders and did a shoulder opening technique on the corner of a wall. I was feeling great and ready to work!
We moved into some responsive drills that he usually does with his more athletic clients. These are a series of exercises that you must do on a command such as “go” or at the sound of a clap. It tests your ability to move through (and remember) a specific sequence on command. It actually reminded me a little bit of the Volleyball Agility Training that I did yesterday.
We continued on to an upper body series to really test out those shoulders that we had just loosened up. Matt pushed me with heavier weights that I typically workout with in his classes. Those Bowflex weights look big and bulky so it’s hard to see what weight they actually are on camera haha! When we moved to deadlifts he realized that I really only max my workout load at 10-15 pounds (you should have seen the look of shock on his face). He mentioned that the weight I use for deadlifts should ALWAYS be heavier then what I use for squats. He also pieced together that my quads are probably stronger than my hamstrings for this reason – he would be correct, quads of steel my friends. Matt had me finish out the session with some elevated single leg lifts to target the glutes instead of letting my quads do all of the work.
Would you do it again?
Overall Rating: For sure! I mean I workout every day with Beyond the Movements so I will definitely be back. This one-on-one training session with Beyond the Movements taught me a lot! I learned some new drills for responsiveness which will help once we can go back to playing sports again! I also learned some new techniques for loosening up my shoulders that I will be implementing daily.

The Virtual Class Pass is the only workout that I have done for the past year (other than running and cycling and of course this 28 day challenge). I actually look forward to each class every day! Let me know if you try a training session with Beyond the Movements and LOVE working out with them as much as I do!
