Learn Swahili Words

Swahili is spoken in many African countries but is known as the official language in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. It is estimated that 150 million people speak Swahili which is know as Kiswahili to native speakers.  I did not know many Swahili words before I started this month’s challenge, but I am happy to announce that Swahili is one of the easier languages to actually pronounce. Sweden is hard, OK? Keep reading to learn the thirteen must-know Swahili words for all beginners!

Basic Swahili Words and Phrases

Hi, I’m Krysta. (Informal) – Habari, Mimi ni Krysta

Hello, my name is Krysta Kalajian. (Be sure to include your last name with a formal greeting. – Shikamoo. Jina langu ni Krysta Kalajian.

Nice to meet you – Ninafuraha kukutana na wewe

Thank you – Asante

You’re welcome -Karibu

Don’t mention it – Kamwe

Hi – Habari (informal)

Good-bye – Kwaheri

See you Soon – Tuonane Tena

Yes – Ndio (pronounce dio)

No– Hapana

OK– Sawa

Excuse me, Do you speak English? – Samahani, Unaongea  Kiingereza? (Informal)

Where is the rest room? – Msalani ni wapi?

Fun Swahili Phrases

  1. Dalili ya mvua ni mawingu
    1. Literal Translation: Clouds are a sign of rain.
    2. Actual Meaning: You can predict your success but watching for the right signs
  2. Haraka harka haina baraka
      1. Literal Translation: Hurry hurry has no blessing
      2. Actual Meaning: Haste makes waste
  3. Hakuna masika yasiyokuwa na mbu
        1. Literal Translation: There isn’t a rainy season without mosquitos
        2. Actual Meaning: With anything good comes anything bad

And of course, everyone’s favorite phase from Lion King, Hakuna Matata (it means no worries 😉).
