Happy Throwback Week! A friend suggested I try a Jane Fonda workout this month and I ran with it for an ENTIRE WEEK of THROWBACK workouts! I am talking about ALL of the classics! This week I am starting strong with a workout from the year I was born, 1992! I was pretty excited to find Jane Fonda’s Step Aerobics and Abs Workout on Youtube! When I was a kid I used to play on my mom’s stepper all of the time! I’m not sure I ever saw my mom actually do these workouts, but I definitely had fun playing with the stepper!
Equipment: You just need a stepper platform! Of course I did not come prepared for this one and just did this workout on the floor. According to Women’s Health Magazine, The Step Original Aerobic Platform is the highest rated. I am pretty sure this is the same one my mom had years ago – same concept just the colors are much sleeker now.
Isn’t Jane Fonda an Actress?
Jane Fonda is an actress! She had done ballet classes for years to keep fit and turned to aerobics after fracturing her foot. Jane Fonda broke into the workout industry in the 1980s with her VHS Jane Fonda’s Workout. It was the top selling VHS for six years! She continued on to make 22 videos over the next 13 years. I always knew she was known for her ballet leg warmers and high waisted leotards, but had no idea she was such pioneer in the fitness space!
Thankfully you can find many of her workouts on Youtube – the quality is a little iffy, some are definitely better than others. I was happy to find this 1992 gem and just dive right in! I loved that the class had a warm up and a cool down (you know me and my strong feelings about stretching). The aerobics portion rotated through a few instructors which I thought kept the class interesting. I won’t lie though, the entire time I just kept wondering how people did these routines?! When I go to Zumba I find it so hard to keep up because once you finally get in the grove all of the moves change! Step Aerobics and Zumba have that in common.
Tell me more about Aerobics and Abs!
This class had some fun 90s music mixed with a little country. It was nice to change it up from the usual EDM or pop music in most workouts these days. Overall I loved that the class felt light, not intimidating at all. Sometimes you go to classes and hate every second of it because of the mentality in the room. Thankfully this one was bright and cheery. I spent a lot of time tripping over my own feet trying to figure out the moves before they quickly changed.
Moving into the ab portion with Ms. Jane Fonda herself was a different story. The abs took place right at the end for the last 15 minutes of class. It was a more serious tone but I defiantly caught myself laughing at the way she spoke about what we were doing. While I floundered through the aerobics portion, the abs killed me in the best way. A lot of the workouts here are similar to exercises I do the year 2021. Jane Fonda’s Abs were a little more modified, but no joke at all. Your abs will be firing up within minutes!
So would you do it again?
Overall Rating: Honestly I had so much fun just laughing along to Jane Fonda’s Step Aerobic and Abs. I could barely keep up! My actual workout output was much less than usual as I struggled to follow along. If you were to do this workout over and over you would easily figure out the routine, but just a one off is a little tough. I do recommend trying this class if you are looking to mix it up! This is especially great if you are looking for a lighthearted workout and maybe even a little chuckle here and there!

PS- Who would have thought that you can burn 165 calories doing low impact aerobics?
