Jane DO Fitness Studio

Have you been curious to learn more about a Jane DO workout class? If so, this article is for you!

I decided to start a series all about boutique gym reviews! Who doesn’t like an honest review before taking a class at a studio they’ve never been to before?! If you live in Hoboken or Jersey City, this fitness studio review is especially for you! Jane Do is a female-run studio that focuses on having fun through a variety of classes that allow you to cross-train and become your strongest you!

This post is all about what it’s like to take a class at a Jane DO studio!

What is Jane DO?

Former Rockettes Founded Jane DO

Yes! You read that right! Jacey Lambros met Danielle DeAngelo while they were Rockettes at Radio City. They turned their passion for dance and fitness into Jane DO after they left NYC for New Jersey (as most people do hehe). Together they have created a safe community for women to be their best selves and get stronger and more confident through a variety of workout classes. The best part is that most of their instructors are off-broadway actors and are just so fun to work out with!

What exactly are the classes?

Jane DO offers 5 signature classes. Each class is 50 minutes and is meant for all fitness levels!

Train Jane is their signature class, involving high-intensity intervals with strength training and cardio elements. Step it Up is a fan favorite with my friends! Yes, it is a step class. Think of an updated more intense version of your mom’s Jane Fonda Step Class. Tramp Stamp is an equally fun workout if you are looking for something non-traditional! Who doesn’t love a trampoline class to mix it up?!

Dance Your A** Off is a total body workout in the form of a dance party! And no, you don’t need to be a hip-hop dancer to be able to participate! And lastly, Get Lifted is their only class that is strictly low-impact. This is your more true strength training class which pairs nicely with any of the others for a well-rounded week of workouts!

Location Location Location!

As you could have guessed, Jane DO has studios in Hoboken, NJ and Jersey City NJ. You can find the Hoboken studio tucked away uptown, next to the Monroe Center. The Jersey City location is centrally located on Grove Street, right near the path station! And believe it or not, Jane DO just expanded down south and opened its first location in Charleston, South Carolina! If you are lucky enough to live near one of these three cities, you have to try a class here!

What I Wish I Knew BEFORE my First Class

To be fair, I have been to Jane DO a few times over the past few years and have tried almost all of their classes! The first class I ever took with them was actually a free class on the river. Jacey and Danielle showed up just as the sun was setting and had some difficulties getting the music to work. I still remember how they kept their cool despite the technical difficulties. They were funny and very high energy. I’ll never forget that these two girls felt like an attainable version of the person I wanted to be.

Outdoor Class

The only outdoor class that I have attended is Train Jane (it is also offered indoors). This class will kick your butt in the best way. The music is great and the instructor is always high-energy. If you can follow along with choreography in other dance class types of workouts, you’re going to thrive here. If follow-along while trying to be coordinated isn’t your thing, you may want to skip the outdoor class. While the pros of outdoor classes are sunlight, fresh air, and sometimes a breeze, you have to remember that you are still out in public!

Most of the time, people stop by to watch or take a quick video to send to their friends or share on their social media accounts. If you aren’t cool with strangers watching you work out, stick to the indoor classes for dark rooms and more privacy. Overall I love Train Jane for a well-rounded workout! My only other con is that burpees are involved and they always make me want to vomit. Just keep that in mind!

Indoor Classes

I attended my first Get Lifted class (in Hoboken) recently and also wanted to share my experience. The instructor asked about any injuries and was helpful throughout the class if you had any modifications.  What I really liked about this class was that it was low-impact!

As you walked in the instructor told us to grab medium weights. However, I have learned that “medium” is subjective. With my peloton strength classes, “medium” is usually 10-20 pounds. I was surprised to walk into the closet with all the weights and find that the heaviest weight they have is 8 pounds! I grabbed 5s since that’s what everyone else also seemed to have. The 5s were definitely the right amount for the small choreographed routines we were doing! Some exercises could have used heavier weights, but overall, I am not complaining!

The class was also in a dark room with mirrors on two walls. I always appreciate a dark studio for classes!

F3 Workout Must-Haves

The Cool-Down

I have to say, I really think my favorite part of any workout class is the cool-down. Studios really stand out to me if they have an element of relaxation after a heart-pumping workout. If you take a class at Jane DO, their cool-down includes just laying flat on your back for a couple of minutes to slow your heart rate before stretching. The instructor even walks around with a rose-water spray. I am not usually a facial spray kind of person, but it feels SO REFRESHING. Just take the spray! Aside from the nice touch with the spray, I am a stickler for stretching after working out. I appreciated that they really took the time to stretch through all of the muscles we had just worked so hard!

Other Things to Note

The studio itself is super cute. Very bright pink and black themed with Jane DO crowns everywhere! If you are looking for a community on top of great workouts, this is your spot. The lockers are a tad small, so if you have a large purse, you may have trouble shoving it in there. These lockers also don’t come with built-in locks but are located in a separate locker room, not the lobby. I don’t remember seeing a shower but it’s usually not an issue if you’re just headed home after class anyway! In terms of having that true ”girl community” feel, Jane DO also offers fun events like bubbly and bingo nights, pop-up classes, fun giveaways, and they even host bachelorette parties for private classes! I even dragged my boyfriend to a virtual Valentine’s Day workout. They do it all here!

Jane DO Bingo and Bubbly
